Dazzling DC

October 22, 2014

Let me first say I’m so excited to write for a new Web site called The High Boy—sort of a younger, hipper version of 1st Dibs. Earlier today, I was looking for my story, about a perfect fall neighborhood jaunt through the city, but instead (as will happen with this site), I came across this wild, 1960s-era travel poster from the Washington Convention and Visitors Bureau:

doandsee

I can’t stop looking at it! At $1,400, sadly, It won’t come home to me, but I do already have this awesome print by Torie Partidge of Cherry Blossom Creative, which is directly in my line of sight as I work:

distofcolumbia

I found this print last year during an event at Miss Pixie’s on 14th Street, where local vendors set up around the store to sell their arts and crafts. I snapped up my DC map print for $20. Torie’s drawn most of the city’s neighborhoods in the same vein:

georgetown

Shaw

capitolhill

I’m obsessed with art and photographs that have to do with DC—especially all these colorful, pop-art takes on the city and its street scape. And clearly, they run the gamut on price point, so there’s something for everyone.

Great post, Jennifer. I also love The High Boy and so excited to see you writing for them. Miss Pixie”s is another gem of a place for vintage and cool finds. Our shop counter is the previous Miss Pixie’s counter they had for years. Have to share with you: http://rhballard.blogspot.com/2013/07/new-shop-counter-from-miss-pixies.html – Have a great day! 🙂

The amazing thing about the #uscapitol is that we enjoy the same beauty as the generations before us. Our fashions might change, but not the glorious encaustic tile, gilded mirrors or the clover-like pendant lights in the Senate Press Gallery. Swipe to see the modern version, shot by @ronbluntphoto.

CONGRATULATIONS to Michele Lerner for her award from the Nation Association of Real Estate Editors on a @washingtonpost story about bringing the outdoors inside, which features our bathroom renovation by @aidandesign ! The judges wrote: “She finds the perfect couple to illustrate the theme of her story. They lie by a nature trail, so they wanted to add natural stone to the shower.” Great story Michele, and it was a pleasure to speak to you!

Welcome to DC Mayor @murielbowser's home, where designer Trystin Kier Francis of @thekiercompany painted this chest purple with gold hardware. Regal, just like the mayor, Trystin told me. I agree! Full story at the link in my bio.
