It’s that time of year when we can actually go beyond Georgetown’s famous facades and see how its residents live. The Georgetown House Tour is taking place this Saturday, and the $50 tickets benefit the ministries of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
I spoke to the co-chairs—Hannah Isles and Kelly Stavish—who gave me some juicy details about some of the nine properties on this year’s tour, the 87th in tour history:
—Not all of the properties are homes. The tour includes the company offices of the preppy-chic clothing brand Tuckernuck, where some of the catalog’s photo shoots take place:
And the Colonial charm of the private City Tavern Club, whose building dates to 1796:
— For the first time, the tour will include a designers-and-architects panel discussion on Georgetown architecture and interiors. The panel, whose members are all Georgetown residents, includes: designers Frank Randolph and Deborah Winsor; and architects Dale Overmyer an Christian Zapatka. Zapatka designed a top-to-bottom renovation on one of the tour homes this year, which graced the cover of last week’s Georgetowner:
Apropos of the newspaper’s subhead—”The Dinner Party is Back!”—Hannah and Kelly told me that every house will have an elaborate table setting laid out so we can imagine ourselves as a dinner guest.
—Most houses on this year’s tour are home to young families, so “each one of the houses has done some renovation to make it work for modern families,” Kelly said. But the history is always there, as with 3130 P Street, below right, which has an indoor pool where senators and other VIPs would gather in the old days and sip martinis while they took a dip.
—Here’s a peek at the rest of the homes. Hopefully it will whet your appetite to visit them in person on Saturday!
This final house, 2905 Q Street, allows us a glimpse of the interiors:
