DC Designers’ Mod Picks from Apartment Zero

December 11, 2014

Remember Apartment Zero, the fabulous modern interiors shop in Penn Quarter? Well, they may not have their storefront anymore, but they are still practicing cutting edge design—and selling it. I was just reading their recent newsletter like a magazine this week, seeing what our area’s prominent designers are specifying for their projects. Here are my favorites, and you can see the whole digest right here. Apartment Zero is the local dealer for these products, and you can contact Douglas Burton to purchase.

Thomas Pheasant specified these Offecct Carry-On Stools from Sweden for a residential interior in California, and Studios Architecture used them in a DC office.

morosofishbone.080922

How cool are these quilt-patterned Moroso Fishbone tables? Perkins + Will specified them for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture.

torristool.081117Andreas Charalambous of Forma Design used the Vancouver-based Bensen’s Torii Barstools for a home in DC.

tomdixonetchweb2.110619

Drooling over Brit Tom Dixon‘s Etch Web lamp, which Streetsense is using at DC’s Harvest Restaurant.

dixon-glass-knobs.083142

Sagatov Homes in is using another Tom Dixon beauty — these glass knobs — for an Arlington home.

bensenlitesofa2.163920

This Lite Sofa by Bensen can now be found at the Under Armour offices in Baltimore.

morosogentry.164711

Deee-licious! Jessica Mowery of MOW Design Studio ordered Moroso’s Gentry Sofa for a residential client in DC.

Phase-Design-Reza-Feiz-Wired-Dining-Table-2.114205

You almost don’t want to put chairs around it. My good friend, designer Jeff Akseizer, chose the Wired Dining Table by West Hollywood’s Phase Design for a local client.

minima.165523

They’re on trend! Hapstak Demetriou used Offecct’s Minima Sofa for a multi-family commercial project in DC — it’s in Pantone’s 2015 color of the year, Marsala.

spekekleinimage.164252

I am ALL OVER these Finn tables by Canada-based Speke Klein — seriously considering the oval coffee table for our new family room design.

foscarini

These facets are fabulous on the Italian-made Diesel Collection Rock floor lamps by Foscarini, which Hickok Cole is using in a multi-family commericial project in DC.

There’s tons more interesting products in Douglas’ roundup, right here — a big thanks to him for showing us how many designers are going mod in DC. And not only that, he’s been instrumental in the upcoming ReUse/ReTouch/ReDutch design exhibition at the Dutch Embassy on Dec. 14 and 15. Check it out!

The wired dining table by Jeff Akseizer is my favorite. The wire and dark wood combo really work. Also dying for Tom Dixon’s Etch Web lamp! I looked at the Apartment Zero digest and I agree that DC designers are really working on some innovative, modern designs. Were there any designs that you raised a brow too? They all work so well, I want them all.

The amazing thing about the #uscapitol is that we enjoy the same beauty as the generations before us. Our fashions might change, but not the glorious encaustic tile, gilded mirrors or the clover-like pendant lights in the Senate Press Gallery. Swipe to see the modern version, shot by @ronbluntphoto.

CONGRATULATIONS to Michele Lerner for her award from the Nation Association of Real Estate Editors on a @washingtonpost story about bringing the outdoors inside, which features our bathroom renovation by @aidandesign ! The judges wrote: “She finds the perfect couple to illustrate the theme of her story. They lie by a nature trail, so they wanted to add natural stone to the shower.” Great story Michele, and it was a pleasure to speak to you!
