“Painted” Candles: Jo Malone and Farrow & Ball

April 20, 2010

I came home the other day to find a box on my doorstep, and here’s what I found inside:

I’m not normally a candle person, but for Jo Malone? I would certainly make an exception! I had known this was coming, as the PR lady from Farrow & Ball had told me about a partnership between these two British companies, but I was kind of unsure how paint and candles could work. Then I opened the box:

They sent me their “Contemporary Classic” candle, which is paired with a sample pot of Farrow’s Breakfast Room Green. And how interesting that it just happens to go wonderfully with the bowl in my breakfast room (and my beloved black beeswax candles):

The candles, which come in five colors, are “designed to create a scented ambiance and enhance any decor.” It’s a great marketing scheme, because of course now that I’m armed with my sample pot, I’m going love it so much that I’ll run out and buy more paint to go with my new candle!

Well, maybe not, but I assume that’s the goal. I do like the candle in my breakfast room — here’s a wider shot:

Here’s Farrow & Ball’s version of a breakfast room:

The Contemporary Classic contains Jo Malone's Lime Basil & Mandarin candle.

My favorite setting is The Fresh Outdoors:

This candle displays Farrow & Ball's Cream color, along with Jo Malone's Grapefruit.

Here are the five versions, which will be available in May:

FB Cream, JM Grapefruit; FB Breakfast Room Green, JM Lime Basil & Mandarin; FB Pelt, JM Wild Fig & Cassis; FB Eating Room Red, JM Pomegranate Noir; FB Oval Room Blue, JM Blue Agava & Cacao

You can get the candle/paint combinations at Neiman Marcus or local Farrow & Ball stockists, such as Color Wheel in McLean.

Very savvy marketing concept. Pairing two great brands can only enhance each of them. Enjoy your candle! I’m sure it smells divine. Have you decided what you’re going to paint?

Sally, we just got done painting the dining room, and we’re starting in on the boys’ room now. The candle is nice, but I don’t think I’ll go forward with painting the breakfast room! I do like the colors, though, and how they can fit right in to a room’s color scheme.

Oohh, I LOVE her candles! I have the grapefruit and will have to check out the others, thanks for the heads up! *Amy

When I told my husband I wanted to name our first son Henry, he readily agreed because Henry Aaron was his favorite baseball player of all time. And several years later, my mother gave a framed, signed photograph of this legend to @hjsergent for Christmas, and it hangs right next to his bed. What a sad day, felt all the more personally because I can’t think of my wonderful son without thinking also of the great man who helped inspire his name.🙏🏻

Interior design isn’t just pretty. There’s real power and symbolism in the choices you make, which deeply affects how you and your visitors feel in your home. This @washingtonpost piece on the #ovaloffice, linked in bio, illustrates how. @potus

The amazing thing about the #uscapitol is that we enjoy the same beauty as the generations before us. Our fashions might change, but not the glorious encaustic tile, gilded mirrors or the clover-like pendant lights in the Senate Press Gallery. Swipe to see the modern version, shot by @ronbluntphoto.

CONGRATULATIONS to Michele Lerner for her award from the Nation Association of Real Estate Editors on a @washingtonpost story about bringing the outdoors inside, which features our bathroom renovation by @aidandesign ! The judges wrote: “She finds the perfect couple to illustrate the theme of her story. They lie by a nature trail, so they wanted to add natural stone to the shower.” Great story Michele, and it was a pleasure to speak to you!
