Design Inspiration at 22West

July 1, 2010

There is a bit of a trend going on with condos using interior designers to decorate their model units in an effort to show buyers the best potential of their living spaces. 22West, the new, glass-and-steel condo across from the Ritz-Carlton in the West End, has pulled out all the stops. The first model units were designed through Vastu and Contemporaria. Next came a unit outfitted by Baker Furniture. And now, designer Vivian Braunohler of Braunohler Design Associates in DC has completed another model unit.

The sofa table was made locally through Salvations Architectural Furnishings. The sisal rug was intended as a counterpoint to the smooth, sleek fabrics and materials in the living room.

Eastbanc, who manages sales for 22West, asked Vivian to create a space “that would appeal to a market segment having a design taste that might be drawn to a more eclectic approach” than the other models, according to Matt Hagan, a spokesman for 22West.

Vivian responded with “an in-town retreat … using tailored and classic furnishings — new, vintage and antique.”

The dining room gives a sense to prospective owners of how they can live in the space, using not only dining chairs but a linen-covered settee as well. The table is on casters to suggest a library feel, so it can be used for meals, work, or playing games. The birch logs on the terrace were arranged in planters by Jay Watkins, a local flower designer.

Vivian used a soft palette throughout of taupes, ivory, camel, and accents of soft mauves and lavender — all of which gave her a blank canvas against which she could showcase the furnishings and art.

Local artist Michael West created the art over the sectional sofa in the den. The sofa also serves as pull-out bed.

As an aside, Vivian reports that she got this assignment at the beginning of the year, and had just 45 days to complete it. “Only key furniture pieces that were readily available could be considered. All fabrics had to be in stock, and to top it all off, all of the selections had to be made during the major snows we had in February!” she writes. “The Design Center was closed for a few days, and for a few days we had no power in the office. It was a creative challenge, to say the least.”

Taffeta draperies in the bedrooms add a note of elegance to the understated decor. The lamps and wingback headboard give a tailored, architectural quality to the master bedroom.

To give you an idea of the design mix Vivian’s work joins at 22West, I’ll leave you with images of model units from the other designers.

This lady saw so much, lived through so much, and her son, DC photographer @maxhirshfeld, captured that totality on a return to her former prison at #auschwitz. Today’s blog features a book he wrote and illustrated that was inspired by this journey back to Poland. Link in bio.

My latest story for Home & Design!

A 1940's-era Colonial in Friendship Heights was renovated and expanded into a contemporary abode while preserving its original roots. Natural light, high ceilings and warm wood elements complement the interiors. The rear addition combines two- and three-story volumes with the owners' suite on the third level; the addition was clad in wood siding that comes down over the original brick façade. An open concept master bathroom adds a sleek and sophisticated vibe.

When I told my husband I wanted to name our first son Henry, he readily agreed because Henry Aaron was his favorite baseball player of all time. And several years later, my mother gave a framed, signed photograph of this legend to @hjsergent for Christmas, and it hangs right next to his bed. What a sad day, felt all the more personally because I can’t think of my wonderful son without thinking also of the great man who helped inspire his name.🙏🏻

Interior design isn’t just pretty. There’s real power and symbolism in the choices you make, which deeply affects how you and your visitors feel in your home. This @washingtonpost piece on the #ovaloffice, linked in bio, illustrates how. @potus

The amazing thing about the #uscapitol is that we enjoy the same beauty as the generations before us.
